Silicon Dioxide is produced when silicon is oxidized. It occurs in nature as the abundant mineral Quartz , in living organisms and also in several other minerals. The structure of silicon dioxide is covalent structure in which each silicon atom is covalently bonded to four oxygen atoms and each oxygen atom is covalently bonded to two silicon atoms. It is does not dissolve in water and does not conduct electricity. It is very hard has high melting and boiling point. It is used in production of cement, food, glass, pharmaceuticals, electronics, cosmetics and refractory materials.
